So God made a farmer.

I often talk about the farm...it's one of our favorite places in all the world. Life takes on a different rhythm when we are there. It is a place where we can slow down and recharge. It's a place with beauty as far as the eye can see. Fields and fields of gently rolling hills covered in crops. Pastures with cows scattered amongst the fields of crops. Where rustic structures meet modern day. Where you actually use the phrase, 'ride in to town'. And some of the most breathtaking sunsets I've ever seen have been painted. I'm grateful we have such a unique place to raise our kids. I always look forward to time spent there. This weekend we are headed down to celebrate Avi-Kate's birthday and spend sometime just being. Life is simpler. As long as I live I will never tire of the simple beauty that surrounds me when we are there. Here are a few snapshots from when we were there in May.

Field of corn...it's been several weeks since we've seen it and I'm betting it's huge now.
Sun setting over the cow pasture in front of the farm house.
The road in front of the house.
Stories on the sleeping porch with Nanny.
Farmhouse. It's the house Andy's mom grew up in.

Sweet, deep sleep at the farm due to working and playing hard.
A trip to town can include checking out the chicks and ducks at the local hardware supply store.

There's always an opportunity to get your hands dirty.
Our dog is happiest when he is roaming the farm and playing with Lou. (One of Andy's cousin's dog.)
Cows in the distance next to a field of corn.

I feel like this poem, made famous (again) this winter in the Dodge Ram commercial, sums up life at the farm.

And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board." So God made a farmer.

"I need somebody with arms strong enough to rustle a calf and yet gentle enough to deliver his own grandchild. Somebody to call hogs, tame cantankerous machinery, come home hungry, have to wait lunch until his wife's done feeding visiting ladies and tell the ladies to be sure and come back real soon -- and mean it." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt. And watch it die. Then dry his eyes and say, 'Maybe next year.' I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make harness out of haywire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. And who, planting time and harvest season, will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, pain'n from 'tractor back,' put in another seventy-two hours." So God made a farmer.

God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop in mid-field and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor's place. So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bails, yet gentle enough to tame lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week's work with a five-mile drive to church.

"Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life 'doing what dad does.'" So God made a farmer.

Labor Day Weekend Roundup...

We headed to the farm for the long weekend and it was glorious! The kids wasted no time making themselves right at home. On Saturday we left the kids and went to the classic city, Athens, for the day to see the Dawgs home opener. UGA did something new this year called the Game Ball Relay to deliver the game ball for the start of the game. It started 24 hours earlier at the Shepherd Spinal Center and made it's way from Atlanta to Athens. Vince Dooley ran it in to the stadium and then handed it off to Alison Schmitt. I was super excited to see her on the field since we watched all of her races in London just a few short weeks ago. I'm glad she returned for her senior year in Athens...and I'd love it if Missy Franklin found her way to Athens next year. Enough of that tangent...back to the game. The Dawgs played Buffalo and won by three touchdowns. It was great to be back in Athens watching football. I'm really looking forward to the next few months...now to get the rest of my outfits together for the season. Yes, if you've never experienced a football game in the SEC you are probably scratching your head as to why I'm concerned with my wardrobe. I guess it's just part of being in the south but most people dress up for games...yes, I wore a new sundress to the game that I bought specifically to be a game day dress. I've been dressing up for games since I started going to games. It's just what we do. Need more info click here. Thankfully, one can never have too much red and black in her wardrobe. ;) After the game we headed back to the farm. The kids had a great day with Nanny. The next day our friends, the Hornsbys, drove over from Macon and spent the day with us. AG loved showing Emma the farm and swimming all afternoon with his best friend. We were planning to have a cookout at the pool that evening but a storm rolled in and we ended up having it inside instead. Later that evening AG enjoyed watching Chipper Jones hit a walk-off homer to beat the Phillies in the 9th inning. He went bananas and the family members watching the game were so tickled watching AG. Monday, we laid around and did some projects. That afternoon we did one last swim before getting everything packed back up. We ended up leaving some of our stuff at the farm since we plan to go back in three weeks. AG was beside himself because he didn't want to leave the farm. He even woke up the next morning asking if it was time to go back. We love the farm. Being down there for the weekend was a great way to say goodbye to summer and welcome in the start of fall. Did anyone else do anything fun for Labor Day Weekend?

Early Morning Birthday Parties.

 Hello, Athens...I've missed you.

Vince Dooley and Schmitty on the field.

 Helping Nanny make brownies.

So excited to see his best friend.
Love these two. AG was holding her hand and showing her around.

Swimming the afternoon away. Annie was loving life in the pool.

Ready for College Football...

College football. If you live in the south it's really a way of life and the Edwards household is no exception. Thankfully, I love college football just as much as my husband and look forward to watching football all weekend long in the fall. And now that we are season ticket holders I enjoy spending several Saturdays in the fall on a date with my sweet husband in Athens. Anyways, to kick off the return of college football Chick-fil-A hosted a Father/Son night. Andy took AG and he had an absolute ball. He came home with a football game and a new cow for his collection of 'moo-cows'. He also was not happy about having to take off his 'eye black' for bed. We promised him we'd get him some more for football season with special supers G's on it. Anyways, here's a few pictures after they got home. I'm so grateful for Andy and the relationship he is building with our son. Little things like this matter and have a lasting impression even at this tender age.

Well, we are off to the farm for the weekend. I'm looking forward to being with family for the weekend at one of our favorite places. On Saturday, Andy and I are going to drive to Athens for the game and leave the kids with Nanny for a half day. Then on Sunday the Hornsbys are driving over from Macon for the day. We are excited to show them the farm and have a day to relax together. Andy's sister, Caroline, and her family will also be driving over from Macon that day. Should be a fun day and I am sure the kids will have a blast swimming and visiting the cows. I know AG will sleep like a rock that night. :) Happy Labor Day Weekend to all. Can't believe August has come and gone...this year is just flying by.

Words for Wednesday...Avi-Cakes Bear Cub Edition.

My mom calls Avi-Kate by the nickname Babycakes. AG then combined it to make the nickname Avi-Cakes. Then at some point she started making little growling noises and we started calling her Avi-Cakes Bear Cub. Ha. This spring I stumbled upon this adorable suit at the Gap in Macon complete with Bear Cub ears! I had to have it mainly because it was a long sleeve one piece suit. (Which are an all out necessity when you have fair skinned gingers! And almost impossible to find!) Anyways, the little ears were a nice added bonus. As you can see she loves wearing the hood.

This weekend was her first real trip in to the pool and I was curious to see how she would do. Oh my goodness! She LOVED it. Loved being in the water but can I just say that in the last week or so we have seen her little personality begin to really come out. She's going to be a force to be reckoned with and she is FEARLESS. Pool, heights, new things, it doesn't matter or phase her. Notice in these pictures that she's standing in the pool. We tried the babyfloat and she tolerated it for a bit. We then held her for a bit and then she wanted nothing to do with us but wanted to do the pool all by herself! Really? Andy and I looked at each other thinking you're nuts...12months old and wants to swim by herself. I'm now trying to find something that she can wear that won't hinder her mobility. I need to figure it out before next month when we head to the beach. She also saw AG jumping to Andy in the pool...so she had to do it also. She 'jumped' off the top step in to Andy's arms. She's going to be a swimmer just like her Momma. :) Like I said she's fearless in the water...which is great but we are going to have to really watch her as she's growing!

Oh, sweet Avi-Cakes, our little Bear Cub, how we love you so! You are a sweet and sassy mess. Daddy and I can already see you being a monkey with the way you climb things. You'll be the kid that jumps out of her crib, I'm sure of it. You love to do things all by yourself and we can't wait to see how you grow and change over the next year.

Weekend of fun at the farm...

This past weekend we went to the farm to see Andy's family. We love spending time down there and this weekend was no exception. The county was holding it's annual festival, Buzzard Blast, on Saturday. Originally Andy, Caroline, and I were all going to run the 5K that morning but I decided that leaving Mama with four small children might not be the mother's day present she was looking for. :) So, I stayed home while Andy and Caroline ran. They both placed! That afternoon we went to the festival and the kids had a ball...'cept for when we first arrived the chainsaw sculpture guy was a little loud for Ronnie and AG.
After working up a sweat in the inflatables Nanny took them to get something cool to drink. AG kept telling us the whole way home that he played hard!
We spent some time out by the pool taking pictures and checking out the facelift on the pool since it was made over this spring.

Avi-Kate and Daddy invented a new game. He would tip her back and she would squeal, then he would sit her up and she would purposely fall in to Andy's chest. They did this over and over again.

Avi-Kate snuggled with Nanny while Samson got a thorough scrub down...and AG played in a bucket.

Avi-Kate enjoyed apple juice in her cup all weekend long and she enjoyed her first BBQ. Our  favorite BBQ place, Purvis', is found right outside of town on the way to Mama's house. Whenever we visit we bring it back with us and stash it in the freezer for a later date. We even have her bring some with her when she comes up to visit us.

This little face cracks me up...this particular meal she was trying to determine how she feels about mac'n'cheese.
AG got to see the new litter of barn kittens while Samson was stashed in the house and out of sight.
We also got to visit with aunts, uncles, and lots of cousins. And here's AKs during her last meal before we left. She enjoyed sitting sideways in the highchair all weekend long. (This highchair was Andy's mom's when she was a baby.)

Little sideways legs...she did it all weekend long. Every time we fixed her she turned again. We finally gave up trying.

We'll be back at the farm in a few weeks and we are already looking forward to it.
